Chinese Ink Painting with John Smeulders

Thursdays, March 12 & 19, 2026

12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Description:

Join us for a hands-on workshop and discover the art of Chinese Ink Painting!

Chinese Brush Painting is an ancient art form that originated in China hundreds of years ago and has recently gained popularity among artists around the world. This beginner-friendly class focuses on mastering the “Four Treasures” — brush, ink, paper, and inkstone.

You’ll learn essential techniques such as holding the brush vertically, controlling pressure to create varied line thickness, and balancing water-to-ink ratios. These foundational skills will help you paint natural subjects like bamboo and orchids with confidence.

For the first class, the instructor will provide brushes for use in class and will offer guidance on purchasing your own brushes, coloured inks, and dishes.

Don’t miss your chance to explore this beautiful art form — sign up today!

About the instructor:

Hello! My name is John Smeulders. My journey began in Hilversum, Holland, creating paintings early on at the age of 14, before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Laren, Holland. I then immigrated to Canada in 1952, where I started my career in commercial art before pursuing my dream of becoming an art teacher - a role I've held for decades across various educational institutions. In 1989, I embraced full-time artistry while still continuing part-time teaching and workshops.

Today I continue my artistic journey, contributing to the local artistic scene in Winnipeg through teaching, creating, and exhibiting my art. You can often find me showing my art at art expos and shows, as well as teaching workshops for drawing, painting, calligraphy, and Chinese brush painting.
